ESL Related Links
These are some of the ESL resource sites we have used over the years to collect handouts, lesson plans, flashcards, etc for our classes. Most of these sites the resources are free. A few you have to pay for some stuff. We don't have any business deal with these links. They just have helped us out so much over the years and so we are sure they won't mind being here to help you out too. We don't add just any ESL links here. Just the ones we think provide the best resources with the best methodologies and techniques in mind when they were created. Please tell us in the forum or drop us an email if you know more.
These job sites seem to be the best ones to start looking for an ESL job. It's our opinion, as seasoned ESL teachers though, that the best jobs for teaching are not found on the internet. Once in awhile you will get lucky with them but.....usually the best jobs are found on location. Use these websites to get you where you want to go. If you choose to continue a career as an ESL teacher abroad, we highly recommend that you make a lot of connections with other schools during your contracts because the best jobs usually come from word-of-mouth. Again, that's just our opinion. Please share your opinions with us in the forum.
Certification is a sticky business. TESOL, TEFL, ESOL, CELTA,and more......this is the biggest problem with ESL and the industry as a whole. There is no one international umbrella superceding and monitoring ESL teachers, schools or training facilitators. Therefore, everyone and their grandma offers cert courses. Most are online which we do not recommend you do at all. The most recognized certs throughout Southeast Asia are the ones received by doing a minimum of 120 hours of in-class training with at least 15 hours of in-class practicum. We have listed links to the top cert places we know of and the absolutely most recognized throughout Asia. Regardless, get certified. We all agree that certification does not make the teacher but.....certification does give the teacher well-grounded methodologies and techniques for teaching. This means that we all teach with some level of background knowledge, professionalism and consistency. Nothing makes up for the degree you should get for experience. Once you are certified.....never stop studying and always attach yourself to teachers with proven and verifiable teaching experience. Than emulate them. Every teacher has their own style of delivery but ALL great teachers have the same basic foundation of teaching principles and know-how for applying them effectively in the classroom. We hope teachers get all over this certification thing in the forum because the worst enemy of a certified and qualified ESL teacher is the unprofessional, undisciplined and uncertified "backpacker" teacher.
